At today’s meeting, we gathered the final collection of cans for the food drive we hold annually. It felt so great to know that using a fun method, where the class that raised the most cans got a prize, we were able to collaboratively raise more than 150 pounds of food for the Treasure Coast food bank. I took the cans to the bank myself, and it was so rewarding knowing I organized something and worked with my theatre community as one to do something so helpful.

In today’s Beta club meeting, we gathered for the first time of the senior year. The officers presented us with the several plans they have for our school year and it nonetheless made me excited for all the opportunities they had planned. Last year, we were able to not only impact the community, like with Christmas caroling at the nursery home, but also help our own beta members through the senior hand prints. I plan on attending as many events as possible for Beta this year, as I have seen first hand how working with this group of dedicated students has the ability to do great things.

Today in the lab we did a gel and nanodrop for the DNA extraction I did last time I volunteered. This was something I’ve never done before, and so exciting to learn. The nanodrop tells me how much DNA was inside the extraction I did, determining whether it was done correctly or not. Sadly, my DNA levels were low, indicating a mishap in the extraction, but my supervisor said not to worry because it was only my second extraction and it takes time. Personally, I still was bothered at myself because I recognize how much money is used for just one extraction, when you combine the expensive chemicals and supplies used to do it with the hours of lab time that were used up. This motivates me to be more focused and precise next time. I can’t wait to see the progress in my work.

Today I learned that I earned 3rd place in a competition that my local Red Cross club was holding. The competition was basically who could bring in the most cans in order to donate to Grace packs, which provides children with food to take home over the weekend if they don’t have enough money to buy food themselves. I was personally inspired to bring in cans because of the global significance it has as malnutrition is a major problem for people all around the world. Through the competition, we were able to gather over 100 cans for the program. This really showed us how much of a difference we could make if we worked together.

Today was our first concert of the year, and MY first concert playing 1st part. It was an amazing experience and I felt so empowered as I played the music as I had been practicing it a lot since the chair test. Overall, the Wind Ensemble sounded amazing, and I think Mr. Albert’s chair test really inspired the members of the band to practice harder, therefore making the band better. We played as a unit and the audience loved the concert.

At our first meeting, Maddie and I were nervous as we are the presidents of the club and we didn’t know what to expect. Beforehand, her and I had made a list of things we wanted to talk about and we researched different ways we could get the club involved in global problems. We have been planning this club since last year so we are extremely excited to see what we can accomplish with our group.
